You are not alone – real stories of recovery and resilience brings together lived experience voices from across Australia to share honest reflections on what recovery can look like over time — from planning and learning, to taking steps forward. The conversation will explore the resilience of families and carers, what helps during difficult moments, how broader pressures like cost of living and current events can affect wellbeing, and the role of connection, peer support and belonging in feeling supported.

This webinar may be helpful if you’re veteran, partner, family member, friend, carer, support someone who has served, or want to better understand veterans’ family experiences.

Lived experience speakers

You’ll hear from lived experience advocates and leaders from across the veterans’ family community, including:

Annabelle Wilson — Veteran Family Commissioner; member of the Repatriation Commission and Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission; war widow and mother.

Bev Benporath — President of Partners of Veterans Association; member of the National Carers Advisory Committee; wife of a Vietnam veteran.

Kerry Jenke — Vice President of Melbourne Legacy; advocate; wife of a career soldier and daughter of a World War II veteran.

Renee Wilson — CEO of Families of Veterans’ Guild; spouse of an Afghanistan veteran seriously wounded in service.

Charlotte Webb — Australia’s Defence Family Advocate; former Defence partner and Army Reservist; parent of three.

Hello Forums community,

Just a friendly reminder that our webinar - You are not alone: real stories of recovery and resilience - is on tomorrow night, Wednesday the 6th of May, from 7:00-8:00pm AEDT, online (Zoom). If you've been thinking about joining, there's still time to register. We’d love to see you there. Reserve your spot here.

We are looking forward to hosting this panel discussion, and to hearing from such an incredible group of lived experience voices across the veteran's family community.

And if you can't make it live, or you want to keep the conversation going afterwards, that's exactly what this forum space is here for. Following the webinar, we'll be continuing the discussion right here in the Shoulder to Shoulder space. It'll be a wonderful chance to reflect on what was shared, ask questions, and keep connecting with one another.

Whether you've been following this thread or are joining us for the first time, everyone is welcome.

Thank you for sharing these stories. As a former partner of a veteran I often feel like there is no place for me and my children in the Defence community. After spending 20 years of my life constantly relocating and trying to help my children navigate the challenges of our lives, it's hard to find the place where we belong now. We were all in, and now we are shut out with no voice.

Hi there @Bezza ,

You are not alone. It sounds like things have been really challenging for you to navigate over the years. I hope you find this space supportive as you work through some of what you have experienced.

Over the years, what have you found most helpful in helping you manage the difficulties of life?

By reminding myself that there is boundless love in my children and that my family will always be there for me when I reach out and ask for help. The asking is always the hardest part to action, when you have been so self reliant and/or isolated. If we’re working so hard to keep everything together - embrace the help.
